Scarce oxidizedcopper cross (40 x 40 mm); this is an old, well-made “tailor’s copy” of thisvery rare Imperial Russian decoration from the Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905.The original crosses were authorized in 1914 and awarded to army andnavy officers that participated in the defense of Port Arthur.The original crosses were struck in silverand measured 44 x 48 mm (see Romanov, Dimitri;The Orders, Medals and History of Imperial Russia(2000) pp. 260-261; see alsoKunker sale Catalog October 2, 2009, #8821). The Port Arthur cross was been widely copied, invarious degrees of quality, and is often represented to buyers as an original issue.This is a good quality, early 20thcentury copy; the cross is made of two-piece construction; the center image ofa warship is enameled, not printed. There is no maker-mark on the cross, butthe reverse screw-plate is stamped in Cyrillic with a crown; the screw-plate may or notbe original to the cross.
