It has the original full wrapped, barrel locking clasp brooch, original ribbon and bottom ribbon holder. The ribbon does show wear on the edges and is separated from the brooch at the rear. The planchet is in good condition with no edge knocks. The reverse is officially engraved "HAROLD/VARDINE/HANER/1934". Mr. Haner joined the US Navy in 1931 and reenlisted at least twice, with one of the enlistments in April of 1940, at Bremerton, WA. On November 30, 1941, a week before the Pearl Harbor attack, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor, but aboard the USS Chaumont, for transport to a Fleet assignment in Manila, Philippine Island, via Fiji. In January of 1943, he was promoted to Chief Boatswain's Mate and reassigned to Submarine Chaser 1024 (SC-1024). On March 2, 1943, the USS SC-1024 was struck and collided with two other vessels (USS Plymouth and The Cities Service Fuel). The USS SC-1024, capsized and sunk with no survivors, off the coast of North Carolina. His name is engraved at the Tablets of the Missing, at the East Coast Memorial, in New York City.
I will include a 2 page copy of his Navy Rosters showing his transfer to the Asiatic Fleet and his later presence aboard the USS SC-1024, a copy of his Allied Warships notation for the SC-1024, a 2 page copy of the history and accident report for the SC-1024, a copy of the Washington State Death report, and a copy of his Headstone and Interment Records.
I would assume that he was also eligible for the American Defense Service medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, but if those medals were issued, the whereabouts are unknown.
