Cleber,
Don't know the 1st one on the left. The one on the right is just a small booklet, not really very interesting. My advice: you should get "The Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals" by Paul Mc Daniel. As far as I know it's still the best book around, and the reference for most collectors and serious dealers. Dolf Last edited by Dolf; 02-02-2005 at 06:56 PM. |

Cleber,
"The Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals" is one of the best books for collectors, but the book is expensive - $95.00. If you are a new collector and not sure how far would get into this hobby (addiction), it might be better to buy less expensive book from the beginning, and after you become more and more "addicted" , no question - "The Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals"!!!It's just my opinion and personal experience. Eric. |

Eric,
The problem is that apart from PMD Guide, as far as I know the other less expensive books are simply not really worth while! So imho better start with the "bible", at least I use it every single day, so rather than an initial bad investment why not start with the best one can get? Btw, I recently saw PMD Guide for sale on our favorite auction house, with a starting price of $75! Of course there was also the Buy it Now option for $95, but that was a chance to buy it cheaper than the usual price! Just my two cents... Dolf |

Dolf,
I agree that the most of small books are not the best resources for collectors. When I started my collection I purchased a book for $12.00. It worked fine for me for 3-4 months. Some people stop collecting after several months. I bought PMD Book 5-6 months later after I started my collecting. Again, it's only from my experience. You might be right, buying PMD Book from the beginning would get you much more helpful information. The same time it can scare the new collector with so much complicated (great) information. No doubt, every collector MUST have "The Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals" by Paul Mc Daniel. Eric. |

Eric,
In fact, you'll save money by starting with PMD Guide as you won't need the other small booklets. On the other hand if you buy a few cheaper books before finally buying PMD Guide... see what I mean? Even if someone gives up after collecting Soviet Awards for only a few months I believe it's still worth while, either by keeping it on your books collection or even trying to resell it later. I believe Cleber has been collecting these Soviet Awards for about a year or so, so maybe it's time that he invests the cost of a simple Red Banner on the best reference book I know. And it's not as complicate as it looks! It's indeed quite comprehensive in my opinion! Complicate is the Mondvor site! And that is because I don't speak Russian Anyway, just my two cents... Dolf |

Guys,
The Shishov & Muzalevski is also excellent in my opinion, and it is bilingual. Marc |

Marc,
As far as I'm concerned I can't talk about that one because I don't have it And as we were talking prices that one is even more expensive than PMD Guide, $150 for the 2 Volumes I believe, right? + the shipping costs, which for such a heavy couple of volumes should probably be quite expensive too Dolf |

PMD Purchasing Sources
I have decided to purchase the Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals. Does anyone have any recommended sources from which to purchase it? I couldn't find anything on eBay, Amazon has a 1-2 month estimated delivery. There is another website that advertises copies autographed by PMD but they don't answer their phone or respond to emails. I don't hold out much hope that my local bookstore will have it on the shelf.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions! |
