order of stalin
"Almost every major dealer had a "not a fake, but one of the prototypes" 5-6 years ago. They were very impressive indeed."
so then it was a fake? if that is what you are claiming, why not be straight about it. DougD |

Doug,
Take a look at this thread, it may answer part of your question. In a nutshell, they were apparently going to proceed with production after the prototype stage ( only a handful of prototypes were made ) only Stalin dies and with him, his cult of personality. Order of Stalin

Perhaps what he meant is that we'll never know which dealer had real prototype and which had a fake. |

A very quality book, nicely done with lots of good information for Russian speakers. Much of the first-rate information is directly from the State and mint archives and museums.
The book asserts that there were only three types of screwback Lenins, the "Tractor", "Gold Head", and the "Platinum" and disregards McDaniel's "Silver Head" classification. He produces documentation between the Secretariat and Leningrad Mint complaining about the irregularity of appearance of produced Lenins. At the end of the day, there are still Silver Heads AND Gold Heads, but the author chose to group them into one classification, the "Gold Head". I purchased the book today and it wasn't cheap - $60. Very expensive when you consider it's only about one order (Lenin) and a few pages dedicated to the Order of Stalin prototypes. I would recommend this book only for diehards (that being said, probably most of you reading this posting) or those that can afford several orders of Lenin. |

Let me qualify my statements on the utility of the book. The color photos of the awards and their magnified images are beautiful and nicely done. The book also includes lots of peripheral material photos and textual information, BUT in my opinion the actual utility and value of the book plummets for those who are not Russian-language readers. Take that into account when purchasing the book.
