A small but handy resource is Phil Bartel & Ivan Karnes book Soviet Medals and Badges. It is simple and straight forward.

I believe they wrote it in the late 90s, when the information about the Soviet stuff was still scarce, so it's not a very reliable reference with lots of mistakes, especially in the badges section.

Thanks!! I have it as part of my referrence library because it covered some badges. I'll have to order a copy of that excellent book on badges from that N.J. dealer.
