Translation Help
Been doing a bit of work on the documents in my collection and came across some bits that I am having trouble with:
Can anyone please help. Simon

Re: Translation Help
That's a tough one for me, but I am leaning toward him being a saddler from what I can read in the first image. As for unit, I cannot figure out what a "persostav" is - maybe a composite word meaning "первый состав"?

Re: Translation Help
Image 3 - maybe it's actually башмачник even though it seems to my bad script reading to be башмашник? A brakeman? Is this dude a railroad worker?

Re: Translation Help
Thanks for having a go!!!!!!!!!!!
The first guy I think may have been a harness maker but saddler sounds OK as well - not seen a unit designation written like that before. Would love to know what it is! The third guy - I also thought it read bashmashnik - your idea is interesting but I don't see any supporting evidence in the rest of the booklet. I have attached his schooling section to see if that gives any help - can't work out the abbreviation in that section either. He didn't serve in an armed forces unit but did receive the Medals for Valiant Labour, Valiant Labour in the GPW, Defence of Moscow and Victory over Germany. Simon

Re: Translation Help
I've now sat down with a native speaker. Some of this language is old-fashioned, and there is at least one misspelling here, but this is probably what you are looking at:
1. Served in the cavalry reserve (probably, from what we can gather from the web; the word appears to be a shortened version of "перменный состав") as a saddler for 13 months during the period of 1930 to 1940. 2. Named village council of the village of Kovpita (Ковпыта). 3. Bashmatchnik - shoemaker (the original Russian is slightly misspelled) As for the education notation, he completed in around 1926 six grades of the Синьовскый Primary/Secondary School (the abbreviation НСШ refers to a school that covers that broader range of grades/classes). This school was in Moscow Oblast. You got the awards translations, so I won't go over those. |
