There is a so called "magic pen" or pen gold tester, which also tests for silver, and platinum. I believe they cost $15-20, and I am sure you can find one on eBay. I don't have it yet, and don't know if it is reliable. Alexei Quote:

I NEVER heard of thos medals with gold plating, so I want to SEE them:
Medal of Valor 20th Anniversary of the RKKA Veteran of Labor I am convinced that if they are gold plated, someone did it privatly, or a seller sold it as a "high ranking officer" medals. BTW, near mint medals LOOKS like they are gold plated, but they are not. Tal

Gold plated medals
TAL,
I would love to show you what they look like, but I cannot seem to get them attached. I can scan them into my computer, but can't seem to get them attached to my reply. Can someone talk me through the process of getting them displayed. Thanks, Bill |

It's easy..all you have to do is after you are finished typing in your message look below the text entry window. There is an area called "options" then below this is "attach file". Click on the browse button to look for the image which is stored locally on your computer. It helps if you put images that you scan for posting on the website in a very easy to access place, this way you won't have to look through sub-directory upon sub-directory. I have a tutorial posted in the announcements section which talks about scanning images for the website. It discusses file size requirements and other necessary information. Here is the image from McDaniels site, the Defense of Moscow, with gold-wash. Notice the color and luster of the gold-wash. It is not "brassy".
