Medal For Bravery

Can someone please tell me why some Bravery Medals are numbered and others are not?

ANZAC,

Early issues were numbered (up to approximately 3500000), later issues were not numbered.
It seems to me that you desperately need a copy of Paul McDaniel's book!!!

All good things come to those who wait my friend! Being down under and all it is not that easy getting those sorts of things and of course our dollar doesn't make it any easier

But, it is coming, hmmm....how do I hide it from my wife..

Actually, numbers higher than 3.628.000 have been observed

Paul,

I was giving ANZAC a ballpark estimate from the top of my head. If we want to be accurate, the highest observed number stands presently at 3.658.166

I too was being general, just a little more specific. Incidentally, I've got that number beat by a couple hundred. If you want, when I get home I'll get the actual serial number. I can't remember, but I may have published the number in Echoes of War as the highest encountered.

Yes, I did include it in Echoes on pg. 145. It's #3.658.492.

How could you pass up a Bravery Medal for only ten dollars? That's how much all my medals cost.

I think that back when the medal was initiated (Oct. '38) the Soviet gov't wanted something specific to reward brave soldiers never anticipating they would have millions of brave soldiers less than five years after the fact.

The brave acts they wanted to specifically reward became so commonplace after 3 some-odd million events that they just decided to stop counting.

I guess they were just overwhelmed with numbering Bravery medals and just cut out the labor that was involved with the engraving process.

And they then created newer, serial numbered, awards for greater acts of valor to reward the braver than the brave.

At least that's my take....

Interesting take Eric, likely you are right though

Having answered that question, my next is.......what would act would have to be conducted to win a bravery medal I haven't seen any citations on such as yet.

I know there is a set of defined actions for the awarding of Glories, is there such for bravery Medals
