Soviet Medal To A German Spy

I have a most unusual Soviet award that was issued to over 15 million times. It is the Victory Over Germany Medal. What makes this so unusual is that it was bestowed to a German Spy working for the Russians. This award was instituted in 1945 to commemorate the victory over Germany and was awarded only to active combatants. This award was made to "Veber Rudolf Fredrehovich" (Russian way of spelling of the German name) on February 22, 1946. The award booklet is stamped with a unique Soviet "Komissariat" rubber stamp in red ink with the text in German. It also bears a facsimile signature of KGB head Merkulov and his personal stamp that says "Peoples Commissar of Internal Affairs", forerunner of the KGB. I would say that not many of these were issued to Germans.

You bought it on ebay couple of years ago from me. BTW, the fact that he was a spy was my speculation, and there was a "?" in the description. I wish I had more information about this person.

SPECULATION IS PROBABLY RIGHT

I took the information I posted from your description and I think that this German that had been working for the Russian as an active combatant was either a turn-coat or was a spy. If he didn't fit the description of a spy I don't know one better to receive KGB approval.

That was the only explanation I could think of, based on the booklet. I also think this was one of the most interesting pieces of Soviet militaria I have ever seen.

Talking "SPY" - a little bit too romantic ...

Gentleman,

you all might have a too romantic phantasy, if you think, that the recipient of of this medal was a spy or something like this.

A great number of german antifashists and communists was working in the Red Army during WW II. They had been already in the Sovietunion from the 30s on - you can imagine why ...

Most of them worked in the propaganda units at the fronts or at the general staff, because german was their language and they knew of course the mentality of the Nazi-enemy. These were the guys with the loudspeaker-trucks and producing all the propaganda paper-works.

The correct name of the recipient is: RUDOLF WEBER and he most likely might be the former communist policechief of the GDR-town Borna, who died at the 9th of december 1946 and was known as a meritorious "Antifaschist".

He proberbly returned to Germany with the famous "GRUPPE ULBRICHT" and Stasi-general Markus "Misha" Wolf, whose brother was worldfamous GDR-moviedirector Konrad "Koni" Wolf and whose father was Friedrich Wolf, one of the most important german autors of the last century.

Markus Wolf was from the 50s to the 80s the greatest spymaster in the communist world, but Rudolf Weber was never a spy.

Best regards

Christian Zulus

P.S.: Comrade Weber wouldn't be happy to know, that Mr. Stump is now the owner of his medal.
