Re: Space Medals

Thanks, Eric!
I remember during my early studies of the Soviet Manned Space Flight Program we viewed the Soviet system as one big monolithic organization, with centralized planning and well defined goals. Nothing could have been further from the truth! Asif A. Siddiqi, in his books Sputnik And The Soviet Space Challenge and The Soviet Space Race With Apollo, put's an end to that myth.

As for medals, I'm not sure we'll ever get a handle on all the various Russian organizations issuing space medals. Vassily Omelko has made a great start, and let's just hope he continues to put out his Space Exploration Award books!

With the tulip design on the back it might have something to do with the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

Eric,
Might the second line on the back be "Directorate" rather than "Department?" If so, the 6th Directorate (Scientific Testing Directorate NIU) was responsible for the testing of the N-1 moon rocket at Baikonur, and later, for the Energia-Buran. The 6th Directorate at Baikonur was set up in April 1967. I now believe the medal in post #265 is from the same organization.
Mike

Space Medals - Help With Identification?

This was one of a set of 4 Soviet medals on E that I believe were Space related. The Gagarin medal was for sure, but I'm uncertain about the other 3. Does anyone know anything about any of these medals? Thanks!
