Does anyone remember the auction house that ran late Astronaut Deke Slayton's Russian space badges and medals (Space Medals #278, #279, #280) back in April? I wanted to look up the final bids that won these awards. All I can remember is that at the time I thought the final prices were rather reasonable given that they came from his estate. Thanks!
Mike

Guys,
I was just asking that question looking at the quality (or rather the lack thereof) of manufacturing. Most unofficial orders and medals that I have seen and handled (and I see and handle quite a few each week) are not badly manufactured, so I found it a bit unusual. Now, this is your line of specialization, so you must know better than I do if these pieces meet or not the usual standard of manufacturing for that series. Marc |

New acquisition: Early Soviet Sputnik commemorative medal.
Minted at the Leningrad Mint in 1958. Size: 65mm. Quantity: 645 pieces. Beautiful Soviet artistry from the early, heady days of the Space Race!

I'm curious: Did you ever find out who awarded the two Gagarin medals in post #262? Mike

Re: Buran Commemorative Medal
Thanks, Marc, for translating the back of the Buran commemorative medal in #268:
"Space Federation of the USSR On 15 November 1988/ for the first time in the world/ the guidance system of the Buran space shuttle/ managed the flight and landing/ in automated (without pilot)/ mode."

Ira & Larry Goldberg Auction, April 2008 Results
Thanks, Eric, for providing the name of the auction house that sold a number of Russian Space Badges from the late U.S. Astronaut Deke Slayton's estate!
![]() Lot #471, FSA's Tsiolkovsky Badge, est. $1,000-$1,500, realized $525.00 - a real bargain by any stretch of the imagination! It's the highest award bestowed by the FSA. Lot #472, FSA's Badge For Space Activities Support, est. $750.00-$1000.00, realized $950.00 - which I thought was rather high for this badge. Lot #473, Badge <Guards of Cosmonautics>, est. $250.00-$350.00, realized $250.00. Lot #474, Breast Sign to Honorary Title <Cosmonautics Veteran of Russia>, est. $250.00-$350.00, realized $280.00 - another unbelieveable super bargain! All these badges are pictured in posts #278, #279, & #280. Some very rare items indeed!
