Also, in an earlier post I had said I listed all my u-shaped rings. I went back and found three more tongues to wag, all three of which are present and accounted for in the data just above.

And it looks there are no serial number blocks of u-shaped medals.

Most likely, they were numbered randomly, as your research seems to confirm.

I just added two - 3.389.556 and 3.389.803 that are about 250 away from each other and they are of different types.

I've just examined the two BMs I posted above and the plot is getting thicker. Although they are so closely numbered, the usual soldered-ring 3.389.556 BM has a rounded "3", while on the "tongue" 3.389.803, the 3's are more angled, that is they have a flat, top-bar to the "3" and a downward slant at the free end of the top-bar.

Could it be that all "tongue" BMs have this type of numbering too?

I guess I answered my own question. The very first posting to this thread has the same type of numbering on both BMs. I'll have to post the picture of my two different ones to illustrate the difference.

Note the close serial numbers and different style of "3"'s.

With numbers that close, I'd think they were done in the same place. It might be as simple as the dude who did one of them had a different set of dies/stamps than the dude next to him doing the other one. The stamps are simply tools, and might be of mixed sets in a noisy and busy shop cranking stuff out during war. These are the little questions we'll never know the answer to unless some veteran of labor who worked in one of these shops does a memoir of his medal-making service. Somehow I don't think that book will ever be written.
