i am new to collecting and i have perhaps a dozen or so medals. i always get nervous buying them on our favorite auction site, and i feel bad constantly bothering your guys with minute questions that anyone with a book and a brain can figure out.

SO!

this brings me to my question, having a brain (or so i am told) i find my self missing the book part of this endeavor. what are some essentials that i should buy? thank you all for your help

If I were to select one book to purchase, I would recommend Paul Schmitt and Paul McDaniel's "The Comprehensive Guide To Soviet Orders and Medals". I believe it is not out of print, but copies can be found, though it will cost around $90.00 or so.

I have saved alot of money by asking questions on this forum, and by studying the book. By all means, I would highly encourage asking questions if you have any doubt on anything. Hope this helps!

As you have already read, the Comprehensive Guide and a good magnifying glass are your best tools.

What medals do you have? What is your medal focus?

f you go to this forum http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/f...splay.php?f=40 you will have quite a few threads discussing the reference books. But I agree, MacDaniel's book is a must.

Welcome to the Forum,

Have also a look at this thread :

Apart from The Comprehensive Guide?...

Some books, as the Putnikov one, are not expensive at all, and a good beginner's guide.

Cheers.
