Berlin surrender

In the same spirit, I can recommand a DVD I recently bought in London : "Berlin surrender".

With an english commentary, this documentary tells the story of the battle for Berlin. It features footage filmed by soviet camera crews located alongside combat troops.

60 mn.

Edited by Delta plc.

Enjoy !!

Has anyone seen the mid-70's Soviet cinema production, "...a Zori Zdyes Tikhie" ("...and the Dawns are Quiet Here)? It is the very moving story of a group of Soviet women anti-aircraft gunners, led by a crusty old senior sergeant, who set off in search of a group of fascist parachutists who have landed in their area of operations. It is worth searching out. Ditto for "Ballad Soldata" ("Ballad of a Soldier").

Ballad of a Soldier

This one is easy to find and to buy in DVD... on the web.

"Ballad Of a Soldier" is a 1959 Russian picture. 88 minutes.

The film revolves around Alyosha Skvortsov (Zhanna Prokhorenko), a Russian soldier, who, as the film begins, has just taken out two German tanks by himself. Offered a medal for his actions, he instead requests a leave-of-absence so that he can visit his mother. The majority of the rest of the film follows him on his journey across the countryside, meeting new people and through various means, helping them improve their lives.

"And Dawns are quiet here"

Also quite easy to find and buy in a dedicated russian video/DVD website.

Film based on Boris Vasilyev’s story of the same name.(1972). 181mn

Screenplay: B. Vasilyev, S. Rostotsky. Director: S. Rostotsky.
Starring: A. Martinov, I. Dolganova, O. Ostroumova, Å. ******a et al.

A group of young girls, anti-craft gunners, has to start unequial fighting against the enemy-paratroopers in the front-line area. These girls used to dream of great love, tenderness and family comfort but a severe war fell to their lot and they fulfilled their soldier’s duty completely…

Prizes of IFF (International Film Festival) in Venice (1972) and AUFF (All-Union Film Festival) in Alma-Ata (1973)

The image represents the cover chosen for the videotape, not the original movie picture itself.
