Re: Fake "Defense of" Campaign Medals

Eryk and Marc,

Thanks for that.

I'm only interested in USSR awards anywayand I'm glad that my view of Umalatova awards has been confirmed.

Re: Fake "Defense of" Campaign Medals

Gents,

Speaking of fakes, there appear to be a large number of Umalatova "restrikes" on ebay at the moment.

Also, theres a guy from Ukraine selling supposedly original odessa and sevastopol medals (among others) who gives the following item description:

"we're selling here some of rare soviet Russian WWII awards that belongs to our friend. He collected it for long time and carefully kept it, then he decide to sell it because he need some money now."

The friend must have cornered the market for these rare medals early because the seller keeps listing them and people keep spending a lot of money buying them.

Am I alone in viewing these items with suspicion?

Where can I go to obtain the genuine article, because its certainly not ebay.

RedStar,

I had a look at that seller's wares, and basically everything he is offering is fake.

I didn't get the meaning of your last post

Re: Fake "Defense of" Campaign Medals

Thanks Marc. Thought so.

My last post was basically me saying that it appeared that there was nowhere to go to get genuine odessa/sevastopol medals, and certainly not ebay.

Some major dealers have them , I cant post the sites here but you can PM me if you dont know of any. They are not an item you are likely to pick up cheaply these days.

Thoughts on this one? I don't like it because of the eye shape, collar outline etc.

Re: Sevastopol Good?

Hi,

referring to the images I think it`s ok. Manufacturing and patina look genuine - but better images are needed.

A very nice condition for such an early variation

Re: Sevastopol Good?

Sevastopol's are tough*, but I probably don't have to tell you that.
The one I own has only a few things in common with the two images at Mondvor's site. In fact, I took some pictures of it recently and compared them with images on the web and came away (yet again) with only more questions. But Alexei viewed the images when I posted them a while back and said "OK" and I believe Paul saw it in person and said the same.
What you & I have in common is the 'font' of the letters to a certain degree (especially the two letters on either side of the upper cannon barrels (those that look like 'Y' & 'C')). What doesn't match up is the sailor's face and the ends of his cap tallies.
But if it's bad it's not nearly as fake as the Partisan1 I have.
I'm leaning ever so slightly towards 'good'.
But then again I'm not remotely close to being an expert on fake detection.

* the only tougher, IMO, are Odessa's.
