Re: Fake "Defense of" Campaign Medals

Ruiz,

For whatever reason, I don't overly like the first one with the soldered ring. The second one is OK.

Re: Fake "Defense of" Campaign Medals

Ruiz,

I am with Marc about the second medal, and am unsure about the first one. Gut feeling says bad, but at least a 1200dpi scan is needed to be certain. I think it's the face - too round.

Re: Fake "Defense of" Campaign Medals

Gents,

Firstly, my apologies if i have put this in the wrong area. I've only been a member for a few days and am still working things out.

Recently I noticed a number of "defence of " medals with blank documentation for sale on ebay as "restrikes". They included odessa and sevastopol. The documents were signed by S Umalatova. After finding out who she is, I formed the view that they are fakes. What is the consensus? There seems to be some ambivalence about Umalatova orders (as opposed to medals) elsewhere in this forum.

Re: Fake "Defense of" Campaign Medals

Never bothered to debate as I'm interested in WWII era items (and perhaps early Cold War if the item's right... ), and my view is simple. If it wasn't produced by the USSR then it's not a Soviet award. Given that the USSR ceased to exist the status of Umalatova items is obvious from my pov. Even if the item is ostensibly "for" WWII.

There are other views of things made post USSR I'm sure; catch up awards, jubilee medals, on and on. But if what you're interested in is the USSR then Umalatova ain't it.

On the flip side if what you're interested in are shiny bits, or even the sweep of history not limited to the USSR then Umalatova may have a place. They're more than tourist items; they represent a cultural part of Russia post USSR. COuld liken them to documents, flags, awards, etc from Confederate veterans groups after the US civil war. Are they really Civil War items? No, IMO. Are they "official" in any meaningful sense of USA official? Of course not. Are they historic? Sure, if you're interested in the social history of post Civil War culture.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: Fake "Defense of" Campaign Medals

RedStar,

Umalatova awards have been discussed at length on this (and other) forum, so I won't get into that here. The "awards" such as the Defense of Odessa medal are not official mint strikes; they are what we simply refer to as fakes.
