Fake Ushakov Medals

(Courtesy of Nota Bene)

Obverse and reverse of a fake Ushakov Medal. A nice copy that still lacks detail. Artificial patina is evident, serial number is sloppily stamped. This fake is made of a single piece (edge gives up) despite an attempt to make the collector believe otherwise. Has minor "wear" traces and comes on original suspension with worn ribbon.

Another fake Ushakov Medal, reverse. This fake is also made from one piece of silver (edge gives up), serial number is very deeply stamped, has a very large and thin loop and a long "spine" at the bottom of the anchor. This medal comes on original suspension with original chain. Not a very good fake, but still worth mentioning.

Edges of three Ushakov medals compared, only the center medal is original. Note the thin line where the two pieces are joined together.

hmmm,

Numbers look stamped a little to deep, a little to much "spine" detail at the bottom of the anchor, large suspension ring, dots look uneven (look at the area between Ushakovs head and the word "Ushakov" ) I'm leaning towards fake..what does everyone else think?

That's what I thoght. Also, there are no spine in the obverse side, at 6 o'clock, in the lower part of the anchor.

I think: - a fake.

Has anyone observed fakes which have a very nicely done "seam" where the two halves of the award have been joined? Alot of collectors (and alot of forgers I assume) know this is a crucial area for authenticity. I have an Ushakov that I have my doubts on. However, the seam of the two pieces is a perfect match.

Hi Everyone,

I also agree it's a fake, just look at the flat Admiral's face, large loop, ugly digits in the serial number, etc. The patina looks artificial too.

I take it this is another eBay special?

Art, I have seen very resently a fake with separately attached anchor. It was very nicely made, very detailed, and the anchor was neatly soldered to the medallion, but it was still too light. It was sent to me by a collector from Canada, who bought it from the "biggest and very serious dealer" in the US. When I told him it was a fake he didn't believe me.
