Liberation of Belgrade; two ring types?

I recently acquired the Belgrade medal on the left, and the one on the right is another from my collection. I am doubtful the new Belgrade is authentic. McDaniel says that he has not observed any of the later ring types such as the one on the left, which he adds is because these were originally awarded ( as the type one, soldered ring variation on the right )and then were supposed to be exchanged for the Medal for Combat Service in the 1950's ( after Tito broke ties with the USSR ).

I've seen more than a few of these later ring variations..my question is, are they authentic, and was there some sort of reason why these were maybe made at a later date? It seems all the campaign medals have an early and later ring variation..so it seems unless these were made along the same time as the other later ring variations, it must be a modern fake?

Physical info:

Early Soldered Ring
16.5 grams, 31.9mm diameter, 2.6mm medal thickness

Later Ring
17.6 grams, 32.14mm diameter, 2.87mm medal thickness

Christer,

What makes you think this card is fake..is the printing of the picture of the medal on the card really checkered like that? I would say that would lead me to believe its fake.

Question

Dear Art,
dear Christer,

as far as I can make out, the date of the document is the 27th of november 1948. The conflict Stalin - Tito started at the meeting at the 10th of february 1948. Was it in november 1948 still possible to get the Belgrade-Medal and not the "Medal for Combat Service" instead of it?

Regards from Vienna

Christian,

McDaniel says that the awards were given up until the 1950's..good thinking though, I didn't even think to check the date it was issued.

Hi Art,

On Volodin/Merlay's book, on page 123 there is a photo of this medal with a "u" shaped ring. However, from your scan I can see a crude joint with the medal, which affect the roundness of the top. This is usually a tip which tell us it's a fake.

Regarding awarding the medal after the end of the Tito-Stalin affair...The variation in which the ring is in one part with the medal is a post WW2 medal, which was awarded as a duplicate and as a late awarded medal due to beraucracy.

Hi, my picture of the cert isn´t so good bur among other things
the rubber stamp isnt stamped at all , its printed !
The whole thing looks more strange in reality.

Its a pity that you have to mistrust almost erverything theese days, I love finding old certifikates they give life to the medals and orders

Hi Art

i found this image on ebay today, and as you can see the "u" ring looks different from your medal.

Another odd thing about my Belgrade medal is that the "u" ring's hole is punched WAY off-center. It doesn't show in the scan very well because of the angle of the medallion, but it doesn't look typical of the quality in construction. Oh well..
