Cossack shashka
Hi All,
I recently picked up this cossack shashka. It hasn't any maker marked and date. Could you please tell me your opinion on this. Thank you in advance, Doc Last edited by Doc; 06-24-2007 at 08:55 AM. |

I am not an expert. I have collection of few nice daggers. I don't like the blade of the sashka. It's too new looking for almost 100 years old. Eric |

Dear Eric,
Thank you for your quick reaction. For your info, the Hungarian royal crown is 1000 (one thousand) years old and believe it or not there is not a tiny spot of rust or dirt on it... looks brand new!!

The bayonet is genuine for sure.
What does the leather washer at the hilt look like? It should be somewhat frayed and deeply indented if this is genuine. The blades were usually marked with a variety of different proofmarks depending upon year and maker and it would be unusual not to have any markings. I have a shashka copy from india which looks just like this except for "made in india" stamped on the blade near the hilt. I would make sure it doesn't appear someone has buffed off such a marking.

![]() I also agree with Jeffrey about marking on the blade. If you look on eBay, you might find 100s of similar items selling from Asia. But it's only my opinion (non-expert), the rest is up to you ![]() Eric |

Nice looking piece. I hope it's real.
I never knew they incorporated bayonet holders on the sword's sheath. Very neat.

I am no expert, but i would risk an opinion that it's real.
It doesn't look like cheap chineese fake (those are really ). It doesn't look like much better quality german replica either. Also the blade looks real, although the lack of markings is a little suspicious.
