FA: Music of Stalin / Album 1937
This is a really nice item, but I have no idea how to set a value on it. Its a set of 4 records from the Bolshoi, 1937, for Stalin. Records are in good shape, as is the rest of the album case.
So, shipping will be $10 UPS ground inside the USA; PM about international. I'll start the auction today and end it Friday 8/15 3pm (NYC time). DougD |

Doug,
It says "Speech", not "Music", on the cover. Marc |

Does this set play at 78rpm or 80rpm?

Ah well, I saw records and assumed music; if you want Stalin in the background of your next party these are for you...i am not sure the playing speed.

Re: FA: Music of Stalin / Album 1937
I've got a Soviet 30's-40's phonograph and a bunch of records, and they are all 78 rpm from what I can tell. They use the standard classic "steel needle", but can also use bamboo needles if you have the cutter. This whole thing is very similar in working to the old 1919 Sears Silvertone I have in storage back stateside.
80rpm was (I think) the Edison "Diamond Disc" system. Those 80rpm records are must less common, and distinctive in that they are unusually thick. They use a different needle and angle to reproduce. There was also a Pathe system out there that got more play in Europe, but in the end, 78rpm dominated until the advent of the 45rpm single and 33rpm LP. I've seen the Stalin speech sets before. I've got a couple at home from one of the sets. They can number quite a few records for the longer ones. |
