order of stalin
just looking around here from my domain in the cloth sector....i thought, according to Kutsenko, that the Order of Stalin was a screwback and not hanging order?
I remember years ago when i saw a big east coast dealer with an order of stalin #03 at a local show; not a fake, but one of the prototypes. Really impressive. DougD |

Doug, my guess is that the suspension was simply a design "test" during the prototype process. I wonder if the author is the same Durov of "Russian and Soviet Military Awards"?

Art,
It's the same Durov. Actually, the book was ready quite a while ago but due to problem with the publisher it took almost a year to deliver to the public. Book on Red Banners is the next in line and ready to be published. It wasn't just one prototype but rather few of them. Kutsenko didn't have access to as much information as Durov has today. Almost every major dealer had a "not a fake, but one of the prototypes" 5-6 years ago. They were very impressive indeed. Last edited by CtahhR; 02-20-2014 at 03:08 PM. |

Eugene, have you seen this book? what are your opinions on the information inside? I enjoyed Durov's other book..perhaps I'll buy this one and hope the photography is of the same caliber as his earlier book.

so then it was a fake? if that is what you are claiming, why not be straight about it. DougD |

Doug,
Take a look at this thread, it may answer part of your question. In a nutshell, they were apparently going to proceed with production after the prototype stage ( only a handful of prototypes were made ) only Stalin dies and with him, his cult of personality. http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9&

Perhaps what he meant is that we'll never know which dealer had real prototype and which had a fake. |
