GPW field commander cap
Hello guys,
Need your opinion on this cap. I bougt it several years ago and it's very salty. Didn't paid too much so not a big deal but I'll be happy if you find it good :D I can try to make better pics if requested. |

Hmm, for a field cap with that much inside wear (and the inside is kind of wierd btw) I would expect the hat to be a lot more faded and beat up on the outside.
The material is also interesting--is it wool? |

cap
...just like the pullovers, there are really tough to nail down...maybe RichieC has some tips, but these can be tough...its not a fake, but dating it for sure is beyond me...if i were selling it by itself i'd have to call it "WWII / WWII era".

The star, without a doubt, is the type that appeared in the early 50s. However, just like buttons on tunics, they can be changed very easily.
I think it is safe to say, as Doug mentioned, that the cap is not a fake and could comfortably be classified as WWII ERA. However, I'm almost certain that these were used well into the 1950s, and even the early 1960s. In any case Felix, it is nice cap... This photo is dated 1947, and the Lt. on our right is wearing what appears to be a cap that is very similar to yours:

So have any of you all ever seen one like this?
It seems to be of vintage construction, acknowledging that even 1960 is almost 50 years ago, but is of a color (even deeper green than on these photos) and a fabric that even Doug says he's never seen. Ideas? I can't make out anything legible on the sweat diamond.

NICE cap Jeffrey! :thumbsup
It seems to made of that same material which we were briefly discussing a few days earlier in a thread about M43 tunics... I personally think yours is late 1940s/early 1950s vintage. If you don't mind me suggesting something, trade that Model 1964 star cockarde in for a nice earlier one. Here is one that I own that is very similar. I truly believe that this one dates from either wartime or shortly thereafter:

Here is another of that same/very similar type of gab material. However, this one never hosted a star cockarde and is un-issued. Alleged provenance tells that it was purchased from an ex-CA warehouse in the Kirovograd area.

The Forum comes through again!
Thanks. I agree this looks like very similar material. It's reassuring to see this cute little cap is not the only one of it's kind. You're also right I should probably swap out the star. One of these days...

Thanks for your help, happy to know it's a legite one, good idea to buy it on this christhmas market..
Here is a picture of the plate, you can see that some small beasts take a lunch... An inside view (front with flash). This cap is made of heavy dark khaki wool, there is nothing wrote on the diamond. |

Here's my contribution--the picture isn't that great, but the hat is in real life :)
