Insurance

What do you think about insurance policy regarding the collection?
How the value of awards is set by insurance company? What about authenticity?

Tal-

I've looked into getting my collection insured several times, but the answer is still the same- you have to get appraisals for each group. Having 30+ groups in my collection, that gets rather expensive! Plus, my collection is always growing, as well as thinning out, so it's hard for me to get new appraisals all the time. If anyone knows of a company that doesn't require appraisals, that would be great...

Gentlemen,

I have my collection insured by the Collectables Insurance Agency of Westminster, MD. They do NOT require an appraisal to insure your collection. In fact, my coverage has increased automatically each year to cover the increased value of my collection. I find their rates to be very fair and they have a good reputation. Their history is that they used to insure only stamp collections and then expanded into other collectables so that they have experience in this field. I have had a policy with them for over 4 years, but have never had a claim.

I can give you their phone number or web page address if you would like. Just email me. If anyone has had a bad experince with them I would really like to know.

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

Go ahead and post the web address. That way anyone interested can go right to their site.

Thanks,

Art

I checked out the Collectables Insurance Agency (CIA) and it looks really good- I've submitted an application for insurance on my collection.

Another that I had been looking into was the insurance offered by HW Wood Ltd in England. They likewise do not require an inventory. I'm still going to send off the application and get a quote from them, to see if they are competative with the CIA.

Another friend told me that the NRA (National Rifle Assn) will insure militaria collections through their gun insurance policies. I haven't checked that out, but it sounds like a good route also.

Does anyone know of any UK companies who offer insurance on medal collections? I imagine they are not covered under my standard household policy. Thanks.

Kind Regards,
Shane Cook.

My insurance company asks for an "expert appraisal" and they told me that for a soviet items collection, an experience dealer or other expert would do. In my collection, I have a bit of everything ranging from orders and medals, to badges and pins, paper documents, gramota, photos, bonds, loto tickets, etc... I also have several common uniforms, banners, hats, etc..

Nothing is really very expensive by itself, but all those low value items put together amount to a good sum to me. Currently, it is only partially covered and I would not like to lose it all in a fire and be left with no money to re-build a collection that took over 6 years to build.

It would be difficult to obtain appraisal for such big number of items and I am thinking I might be better to get a different insurer for the collection than for the house, one that doesn't require an appraisal.

Since this thread started, have anyone had any experience good or bad with any insurer mentionned here Hugh Wood LTD or Collectible Insurance Services LLC or another one?

I would like to hear you in order to make my decision as to what and who to choose.

Thanks in advance.
