Suggestion: list of unresearchable awards
I would like to suggest starting a list of unresearchable awards as a reference. I know there are plenty of reasons why awards may not be researchable (lost archival documents, NKVD/KGB, too recent, Navy, etc.). So on one hand, this list may end up as nothing more than a jumble of numbers. On the other hand, it would be interesting to see if any patters start to arise, as they have with researched awards.
What do you guys think? -Alex |

Re: Suggestion: list of unresearchable awards
I've got one I can put up right now.:( But it makes sense. Especially if you may have one of these and you don't want to waste a researcher's time.

Re: Suggestion: list of unresearchable awards
Good idea.
Perhaps have place to record other pertinent facts: 1) Unresearchable by serial number only. 2) Unresearchable with order book. 3) Partially researchable. For example part of a group that returned some of the award's data but not others. I've run into groups that have the award card but no citation.

A good idea. I don't research at all but the theory makes sense. Who knows what patterns may arise?

Re: Suggestion: list of unresearchable awards
Guys,
It is a bit more complex than what you suggest, IMHO. It happens also that research may come back with nothing, then you submit it through some other channels and, surprise, it is all available... Also, new archives and/or departments are slowly opening up, therefore increasing the scope of information available. Marc |

Re: Suggestion: list of unresearchable awards
Very true. The fact that something wasn't found only means that it wasn't found. I'm not sure what this project would tell us? That research is, on a given day with a specific constellation of stars, sometimes not successful? Anyone who has done research themselves, in any field, knows this.

Re: Suggestion: list of unresearchable awards
And how many of us SMAPFers knew about that info until you just posted it, Marc? I didn't.
The more we talk or post numbers or images here the more we find interesting bits of information. My intention in this post is not to be confrontational; your contributions here are so very valuable and seem to go under the radar a lot of the time. I respect Marc's opinion very highly. Methinks more discussion on this topic is in order. :)

Re: Suggestion: list of unresearchable awards
In my personal experience, no award that was unresearchable the first time has been miraculously found on a second try. I have sent all some requests to all four researchers I have known and never had different results, whether they searched by serial number or name. And as far as I am aware, none have been able to access new archives.

Re: Suggestion: list of unresearchable awards
I have seen that happening a couple of times... Well, we are all only human. But I assume those are exceptions... Plus, we only have research done in TsAMO, not in other archives, so it isn't relevant that more of those are opening up...
