Being 8, I remember my parents scrambling to get us (kids) out of town because they didn't believe that placing a wet towel under all doors would work...

Chernobyl

Rusty,
I'm glad your parents did what they did my friend. At 8years old it must have been scary. I'm glad you made it.

Doc,

I don't think it sank in untill a few years back when I started seeing the documentaries on the tube.

I lived on Kreshatik.
Did you go back to visit? I was there 3 years ago.

Check this out. I was in student (construction) camp (to make some money) that summer. In August we have got some waffles for desert which were made in Pripyat next day after the blast! When somebody looked at the package, half of the table (like 30 people) choked

Ouch!

My family lived in Minsk. After Chernobyl accident, my mom always read labels to make sure the food wasn't produced in the area affected by radiation. Also, to get radiation out of the body, mom had me drink milk with drops of iodine in it. Yuck

My worst memories:
When the accident happened, I worked as a teacher in school in Kiev. In the middle of May (almost one month after the accident ) all children from the 2 million city were evacuated. Our school was evacuated in Dnepropetrovsk area. We staid there for more than two months. It was the worst time in my life.
1. Control and help children that did not whant to be in this camp
2. Parents visits were forbidden.
3. Any inforfmatiom regarding the situation in Chernobyl and Kiev was forbidden
4. Concerns about my family, they staid at home, in Kiev.
