In this case you are right!
You need 6-sided slip-on boards, not 4-sided.

I remember one thing.
If your coat has 1958 buttons you are able to use shoulder boards with normal width like this.

Dug up this old pic ( 1997 or 1998 perhaps) of the M1943 parade uniform for a Doctor in the Naval Medical Service that I owned in my previous life. Was a striking set!

Tricky part is that medical shoulder boards were 4 centimeters wide, not 6.
