What I would like to see also is a book from Mondvor (alone or in partnership with someone else) about the different award documents. He already have a great russian website with all the award documents by types and variation... I think, if translated in english, it could easily make a nice "sister-book" to Paul & Paul awards comprehensive book. Why not a joint project between Desantnik and Mondvor?
I am ready to pre-order my copy of the book. :) |

Echoes Of War: Researching Soviet Military Decorations, By Paul J. Schmitt
I've sent my manuscript to the OMSA editors for a Medal Notes about the Campaign Medals of the USSR. It's picture rich and designed to be of use to the beginner and the veteran collector. I'll let you know when I know when it's due to be published.
Best, Doc |

Please allow me a few comments, especially since I'm being freely volunteered for several projects beyond my interest, competency, and or professional/family commitments. There is a big difference between a great ideal, and a great ideal acted upon. A book takes a LOT of time, energy...and money.
Let me encourage all future authors with great ideals - YOU do something about it. That's how the Red Book (and Green one) came about. Paul and I were both young, energetic, (fortunately teamed with a well-to-do benefactor) and had seen a few things, so we acted on it. You CAN create the new reference. If you can't do it all, team with someone - especially someone you can trust with your life. When MONEY and EGOs get involved, people get wierd. In many cases it may just be easier and less of a hassle to pay a professional, as I did for map creation or publishing. This of course, means the price of your work may increase. The more you can do yourself (or with a partner) for free, the better, but potentially more amateurish the appearance. I mentioned on Paul's website that I will partner with people to further the hobby and I mean it - advice, proofreading, whatever. No takers so far. Some advice - you'll get a lot warmer reception if you are willing to do most of the "heavy lifting". Also remember, this is a hobby. I have a wife of 12 years, a 9-year old, twin 5-year olds, a professional career, and volunteer work that are infinitely more interesting (and sometimes troublesome:) ) than writing about pieces of metal belonging to dead guys. To expound upon what what I said above about great ideals, it's easier to volunteer someone else than do the work yourself. Get writing! |

Paul,
I agree with you 100%. Actually it was you and Paul McDaniel that inspired me to write two articles for the JOMSA one of which will be in the next issue and the OMSA Medal Notes. I saw a niche and I began to write. I'm working on a 3rd article for the JOMSA. I wrote all this to say THANK YOU and Paul M. for not only your excellent books but that you are an inspiration for me to write. Many Thanks, Doc |

Thanks for the nod. I too started early with the JOMSA (Journal of the Orders and Medals Society of America). It's low stress and you can write a decent length article about something with which you are an "expert". I submitted another article last May on Red Square parade participant pins and haven't heard anything back. Seems yours may have been better than mine...
I should also clarify my comments, I did have one forum member ask me to proofread a couple of good articles - when I wrote the comment I intended collaborative efforts. |

Paul,
You are welcome!! My 1st article is a basic introduction to the Order of the Red Star. The other two articles are about two WWII South African Air Force Mechanics and their medals. Dick just received the 1st SAAF article and I am writing the next article now. I'll check with Dick about your article next time I talk with him, if that's okay. Best, Doc |
