Very good books dedicated to MEDALS only, Text in Russian and English. (Borodin and Merlay, Moscow, 1997). A 300 pages book which describes all the variations of Soviet medals. One neat thing is pictures of prototype medals, and even sketches of medals with corrections made by...Stalin!
Another thing is a close up of the rings connecting the medals to the suspension. The cover: Last edited by CtahhR; 02-20-2014 at 01:10 PM. |

Tal,
I agree, I bought my copy some time ago, it has all sorts of great information. I use this one next to McDaniel in frequency. I'm not able to translate Russian very good, but there is some sort of table on the last few pages which list some serial numbers, names and dates for several of the "higher" awards ( Hero of Soviet Union, Hero of Socialist Labor and a few others I don't recognize )

Hi,
I was concidering purchasing 'MEDALS OF THE USSR, by A. VOLODIN AND N. MERLAI', published in 1977 in Latvia. Would anyone care to tell me if it's any good and how much of it is written in English? Thanks. I found the answer to this question "Medals of the USSR" by A. Volodin and N. Merlai (Pechatni Dvor Publishing, 1997, hb, 302 pages, limited run of 3000 copies, retail price- approx $50) This book (I believe) was intended to be a companion volume to the above "Orders of the USSR". This book overcame a lot of the problems that book had, with better photos (including many photos of hanging rings) and an equal Russian-English translation. It has some very good points, to include the listing of all double Heroes of the Soviet Union and the above mentioned hanging ring photos. Drawbacks include the fact that the Appendixes, although very interesting, are not translated into English. This is a good book to have in your collection, though if you own either of the first two books on this page, you can probably live without it. Kind Regards, Shane Cook. MEDALS OF THE USSR
I have this book and I think it is a good book.
There is almost same text in english as in russian and colour pictures. Only the interesting part in the end of the book is not translate in russian language, but if you know russian alfabeta and you have dictionary, so you can easily get the information told there. Jussi-Pekka |

The list mentioned by Art are : * List of dates of institution of Titles, Orders, Medals and Honorary Titles of the USSR. * List of multiple awardees (4, 3 and 2 times) of the Title of Hero of the Soviet Union, with dates. * List of foreign awardees of the Title of Hero fo the Soviet Union, with dates. * List fo multiple awardees (3 times) of the Title of Hero of the Socialist Labor, with dates. * List of Ukaz (laws) establishing orders and medals of the Soviet Union, from 1934 to 1991. It is a nice book, as said earlier by others. :) Cheers. Ch. |
